A 2008–2009 provincial review was launched after concerns about cancelling VCC’s ASL/Deaf Studies program highlighted B.C.’s severe shortage of trained ASL interpreters. Despite high demand, VCC and Douglas College were facing declining enrolment and high attrition, limiting Deaf people’s access to healthcare, legal services, community supports, and employment. Completed in December 2009, the review gathered input across the system and delivered recommendations to improve recruitment/retention, strengthen training models (including appropriate technology), and identify the resources needed to rebuild interpreter education in B.C.
